Melodic Chaotic – Summer Fling

Untitled

It has been three years since Willow Smith dipped her long braided tresses into a can of paint and whipped her hair back and forth. (What? Three years? What have I even been doing since then?) Probably not as much as Smith! This 12-year-old is back, sans lip diamantes, and has teamed up with DJ MVSIC Fabrega to form collaborative duo, Melodic Chaotic.

Melodic Chaotic is a transition from Smith’s earlier pop/hip-hop sound. It has more of a dream-pop, synth and experimental feel, with notes of soul and R&B. Their first single, “Summer Fling”, was released on July 6 of this year and has received mixed reviews.

During her live performance on The Queen Latifah Show, Willow said, “Just for clarity, the word ‘fling’ means something that’s short lived. And this song is dedicated to all the kids around the world whose summer is never long enough.”

You either love it or hate it. Though I think “Summer Fling” is undeniably catchy, it has been criticised for its mature content and the weirdly accurate British accent she puts on.

Yes, the love interest in the video clip looks way too old for her. Yes, she probably is too young to be singing about and experiencing summer flings. But doesn’t this song just make you want to put on a pair of bikinis and go swimming with a cute European boy?

The next summer anthem? Grossly inappropriate? Couldn’t care less about Willow Smith? Have a listen and let us know what you think!

THE BREAKDOWN:

Hometown: Los Angeles, US.
Sounds Like: Reminds me a lot of Solange (aka “indie-Beyonce”). New mentor perhaps?
Say What? Willow Smith was only 9 when she released “Whip My Hair”. What the hell were you doing when you were 9 years old?
