56th Annual Grammy Awards Nominations

The 2014 Grammy Nominations are out! And the art felicis crew are giving you the lowdown (yes, we’re mildly proficient in the art of Google searching). The Grammy Awards Ceremony was first set up in 1959, to honour the achievements of artists in the music industry, and is run by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States. Though it has been criticised for awarding commercially successful, rather than critically successful work, it remains one of the most prestigious awards in the music industry, and we should applaud the efforts of all the artists nominated.

THE BREAKDOWN:

1. Record of the year

Get Lucky – Daft Punk & Pharrell Williams
Radioactive – Imagine Dragons
Royals – Lorde
Locked Out Of Heaven – Bruno Mars
Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke ft. T.I. & Pharrell

2. Album of the year

The Blessed Unrest – Sara Bareilles
Random Access Memories – Daft Punk
Good Kid, M.A.A.D City – Kendrick Lamar
The Heist – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Red – Taylor Swift

3. Song of the year

Just Give Me A Reason – P!nk ft. Nate Ruess
Locked Out Of Heaven – Bruno Mars
Roar – Katy Perry
Royals – Lorde
Same Love – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert

4. Best new artist

James Blake
Kendrick Lamar
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Kacey Musgraves
Ed Sheeran

Surprises? Probably Imagine Dragons and Sara Bareilles. Though I’m a fan of both of their work, it’s nice to see the recognition and praise of lesser known artists. We also have to applaud Jay Z, who snagged nine nominations, as well as Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams who garnered seven. For a full list of all 82 awards, and the nominees, you can click here.
