THE WEEKENDER

WHAT’S NEW IN THE WORLD OF MUSIC AND OUR FAVOURITE LATEST TRACKS.

triple J and the Red Cross teamed up recently to create a festive song with the aim of getting it to the top of the charts and having all proceeds donated to the Red Cross. They bluntly titled it “Christmas Number 1”, and number 1 it did go on the Australian iTunes charts. Drive presenter The Doctor wrote the song and alongside regular triple j presenters, a massive Australian all star cast performed, including Abbe May, Andy Bull, Bertie Blackman and obviously, the Bananas in Pyjamas. It’s also a bit of a humorous dig in the ribs for commercial radio stations, as they’re forced to play a rival station’s own song in their weekly countdowns.

The annual Coopers Australian Music Prize has finalised it’s longlist of new Australian artists and their albums. 2013 is the 9th year it’s been running and past winners include Hermitude’s Hyperparadise in 2012, The Jezabels and Prisoner in 2011 and Bliss Release by Cloud Control in 2010. There are 33 longlist finalists and you can trawl through that pretty long list at your leisure here. I’ve got my bets on either Jagwar Ma, Gossling or The Drones.

Beyoncé dropped a surprise visual album just yesterday because apparently she’s bored with releasing “my music the way I’ve done it…I just want this to come out when it’s ready from me to my fans”. Plenty of great artists are featured on the album including Drake, Frank Ocean, husband Jay-Z…and daughter Blue Ivy! Probably the coolest hip hop/R&B family ever? We also now know where those photos from that famous Brunswick photo shoot went – they’ve made a reappearance as a promotional photo for the album on iTunes. Even Bey loves Brunswick.
