Producer weakling has released four EPs of original music in his four-year career, but his latest offering “Be Jealous” has caught my attention.
After listening and relistening several times trying to work out why it sounded so familiar, I realised that it samples four lines from the 1998 Brandy and Monica track ‘The Boy Is Mine‘ (just sayin’, that is a solid track on its own) – “I know you may be/a bit jealous of me/but you’re blind if you can’t see/that his love is all in me”. Classic!
The image above is the cover art for ‘Be Jealous’, and it so perfectly represents the mood and texture of the track – plush and velvety. And the leopard print just nails the lyrics. It starts off with simple beats before you’re drawn into the deep, R&B inspired vibes. It seems to be less experimental than his previous work, and I can definitely picture this track being spun in the coolest underground bars very soon.
Hometown: Brisbane, Australia.
Sounds like: Aphex Twin, Four Tet, Caribou.
Say what? According to his triple j Unearthed profile, Weakling is simply put as being an “electronic music producer, afraid of birds.”
