Willow Beats are back, giving us a taste of their forthcoming sophomore EP with their latest single “Merewif”.
2013 was a big year for the uncle-niece duo (made up of Narayana Johnson & Kalyani Mumtaz), releasing their Alchemy EP with the lead single “Blue”, which propelled them into the spotlight, racking up half a million plays and got them a gold medal spot on Triple J’s Next Crop and a spot on In the Mix’s Ten Local Producers to Watch. The music they produce is otherworldly, creating a whole new universe of electronic sounds that are a mix of futuristic synths and fantastical sounds of nature with Mumtaz’s ethereal vocals. Johnson cites a love of the fantastical world of elves and dragons, as well as their Hare Krishna upbringing on legends of demons and magical weapons as their inspiration for this music.
Meaning ‘mermaid’ in Old English, “Merewif” is a track that transports you to a dreamlike watery world. It starts with the soothing sounds of waves crashing, and Mumtaz’s voice calling. Like a siren, Mumtaz’s hypnotic vocals call and entice you to join her in the sea, while Johnson’s layers of synths and electronic bass playfully intertwine with the vocals and creates the light and dark of the underwater setting.
If you feel like you just have to own this one, “Merewif” is on sale this Friday 27th June. If you haven’t caught these guys live yet, make sure to get yourself some tickets for the Merewif tour – tickets on sale tomorrow!
