clipping. – Work Work (feat. Cocc Pistol Cree)

I know it was released a couple months ago now, but I must share this song. It’s climbing it’s way up there as one of ma fave drunk dancing jams along with “Get Low” by Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz and “Tipsy” by J-Kwon.

clipping. is made up of rapper Daveed Diggs and producers Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson. Snipes and Hutston joined forces in 2009 as just a remix project but soon developed into a full-fledged production project, when Diggs joined the two producers in 2010 to form a trio. clipping. “makes party music for the club you wish you hadn’t gone to, the car you don’t remember getting in, and the streets you don’t feel safe on”. How’s that for a sell? But they follow through with a tune like “Work Work”. It’s experimental hip-hop at it’s finest, and there’s so many elements happening in this one track. The glass-smashing, jingly beats remind me of Passion Pit‘s unique productions while Cocc Pistol Crees guest rap is like Nicki Minaj pre-Justin Bieber days.

I don’t pretend to understand Diggs’ lyrics without having to Urban Dictionary everything, but the biting and spitting way in which he delivers definitely intimates a certain harshness. Even just reading through the lyrics transports me into an underground west coast gang.

Will clipping. join the likes of alternative west coast poster boys like Kendrick Lamar and Danny Brown? There is certainly potential there.

THE BREAKDOWN:

Hometown: LA, US.
Latest Album: CLPPNG, released 10 June 2014.
Sounds like:  clipping. are self-proclaimed to be drawing inspiration from The Bomb Squad and Dr. Dre.
Say what?  There’s not much info on this trio as of yet, but the video clip is pretty slick and it’s done all in one shot. Worth a look.
