Last Friday I was lying in bed, dreading being covered in food scraps at another shift. To my surprise I learnt that I had just acquired passes to see the Straight Outta Harlem, Trap Lord aka A$AP Ferg and would be spending the night instead, getting covered in beats and trill as rhymes at The Hi-Fi.
The venue began to fill with the electronic sounds of the supporting Colorado act, Paper Diamond, who was a great warm up to the rap delight that is a key member of the A$AP Mob; Darold “Ferg” Ferguson Jr. Everyone was waiting in anticipation for 10:30 which was when the man himself came on stage to blow our simple minds with genius lyrics from his track “Shabba,” a feature on his first 2013 album release Trap Lord.
“Short nigga but my dick tall,
What I told your bitch dog,
Only thug nigga down at the Pitchfork,
Dirty van bitches wanna suck my dick off”
See? Genuis. A few lines later he raps;
“Fergy be mobbing all day, prolly with Marty or Jay“.
Marty Baller is Ferg’s hype man who was also on stage, rapping beside our main man. Jay; Ferg’s paint artist who designs Ferg’s t-shirt collaboration with BAPE was also in attendance on stage.
After laying a few trap beats and getting the crowd going mosh pit wild he did something that filled me with a fervent respect; he extended an invitation to local talent in the crowd to ascend the stage to rap with him. After the crowd went nuts he decided to pull two very lucky, very talented rappers on stage with him and let them rap for the hyped up crowd.
I just want to say, Darold, if you ever read this I just wanted to personally thank you and let you know you are a saint among men. Why? For anyone that is trying to make it in the music industry, a simple gesture such as letting someone rap on stage with you is enough to make a dream come true.
So if you like A$AP Ferg and if you are a quick brown fox you can catch him at Groovin’ The Moo or the two other Hi-Fi‘s in Brisbane and Sydney as part of his sideshow tour, hurry because there aren’t many tickets left. See further tour dates and locations here.
