Gill Bates – Didn’t Mind prod. Feki

It’s all about guessing what the sound of the future is these days. Gill Bates‘ triple j Unearthed profile states “I came back from the future and made some songs”. And with only two songs released, he’s already making a name for himself. I must admit, his spoonerism of a name itself plays a big part in making him memorable. It’s totally a thing: Com Truise, Chet Faker, Dro Carey, just to name a few.

Getting the chance to team up with Allday and now Feki to tap into their fan bases and vibe off their sound doesn’t hurt. Gill Bates’ first track “She Knows” with Allday is dark with brooding production, and the interchanging rapping works well over the top.

Now, get ready for the slightly cheese-y “Didn’t Mind” to spin around in your head for the rest of the day. It’s got a somewhat early 2000s R&B quality to it – I’m dredging up Nelly, Sean Kingston, Iyaz type memories. Ain’t nothing wrong with cheese-y lyrics though, especially with the help of Feki’s typical charming production modernising the whole sound.

Gill Bates’ sound is a perfect addition to the music scene right now. He’s about to start touring with Baro and you can grab tix here.

THE BREAKDOWN:

Hometown: Brisbane, Australia.

Say What? According to an interview with MTV, Gill Bates is from Sudan where the situation is “just fucked….My mom’s always stressing..Being given a second chance with music and the way that it’s going, it’s a blessing.”
