Like much of TOKiMONSTA aka Jennifer Lee’s music, this track is a hard one to pin down.
But you can instantly tell she’s classically trained. The way she slices and dices her music, and the textures that accordingly arise – it’s very carefully thought-out electronic music. No big drops and cliche preinstalled sound effects here.
Instead, “Giving Up” is dark, layered and dancefloor appropriate – but a slow burning, haunted dancefloor. This is some atmospheric shit for a haunted house. Signalling her development as a producer, it’s one of the more serious and mature tracks we’ve heard from her. Helped, no doubt, by the dreamy vocals of Jonny Pierce from The Drums and Erick “Jesus” Coome from Lettuce on bass.
Melting R&B, dance and an indie vocalist is no mean feat. But she rightly notes, “Live music can have a place in electronic music.”
