“What’s my name?” A question that you may have asked at some point during a late night, early morning rendezvous with a stranger. We getcha, Rihanna.
Though perhaps without the “oh nah nah”.
Laying it all out there, ‘What’s My Name’ by Rihanna is one of my favourite songs of all time. It was her second single off Loud back in 2010, which, by the way, was her fifth studio album. She’s now had eight. She’s one of the most famous pop stars in the world. But this is one of her most memorable moments for me. Cut to the chase, it’s a FEEL GOOD track, as overused as that term is.
The video clip is sappy but it’s Rihanna and Drake, so it doesn’t matter because I totally ship them (that’s a thing that people say now, right?). I’ll be the first to admit that I’m dying to walk around “downtown” in that ridiculous outfit which she manages to pull off with fluro red hair.
This song is plainly about a one night stand taken to the next level, full of both candid sexual connotations and quaint sweet nothings. It’s a prime karaoke tune, a dancefloor filler, a belt-in-the-shower soundtrack. And it goes to show what Rihanna can do with just simple on-loop synths and a kicking drum machine, harking back to her Caribbean background with the reggae and ska influences. I’d highly recommend a watch of the clip and a quick reminisce on what you were doing back in late 2010.
Hometown: Rihanna – Saint Michael, Barbados; Drake – Toronto, Canada.
