REVIEW // Cashmere Cat – Trust Nobody ft. Selena Gomez & Tory Lanez

Cashmere Cat

Cashmere Cat is now a big deal apparently.

Norwegian producer Magnus August Høiberg has a song with Selena Gomez and he’s thus offish made it. ‘Trust Nobody’ is his second track of his upcoming debut album, following ‘Wild Love’. Seems like Cashmere Cat has pulled together some commercial wins for this album so far.

‘Trust Nobody’ doesn’t stray far from what you’d expect from a pure Selena Gomez song. It’s got all the markings of a radio-friendly tune – ticking all the boxes: An interluding male vocal from Tory Lanez. Sweet nothing lyrics. Bit of decorative autotune here and there. And Cashmere Cat’s touches are subtle, heard in the xylophonic embellishes and cute drops.

My main memories of him are as an emerging producer back in 2012 with his EPs Mirror Maru and Wedding Bells. He then dropped off the radar a bit, before coming back, collaborations with The Weeknd and Ariana Grande in tow. I’m not entirely sure how or when this jump happened. Previous to this, he was an adorable but semi-known producer that was waiting to be discovered, and then somewhere along the line I guess he got discovered. Now Cashmere is producing for Kanye West, Charli XCX, A$AP Ferg and the like. Props to him. Anyone who writes an instant classic banger like his remix of Miguel’s ‘Do You…’ is deserving.

Based in: US via Norway.
Upcoming album: Wild Love, out soon via Mad Love / Interscope Records.
Sounds like: Lido, Hudson Mohawke, Ryan Hemsworth
Say what? Cashmere Cat is the poster boy of the depressed DJ meme phenomena. I recommend Cashmere Cat Can’t Even for a laugh.
