REVIEW // grandson – Best Friends

grandson have combined a bluesy rock sound with the sleek, pulsating rhythms of trap music.

The result is a lot better than you might’ve expected it to be.

It’s not a new thing for electronic and rock music to be melded together. Many other groups have laid the groundwork for it and it’s been done routinely over the years. But while melding electronic with rock isn’t exactly anything new, trap-flavoured beats with White Stripes-esque guitar work is a little more novel.

Yet, grandson do it with aplomb, with the kind of skittering hi hats and snares you’d generally expect to hear in a Purity Ring track. Distorted guitars and vocals are united with an obligatory swagger. But at this rate, this sound may quickly wear thin.

And at this rate, there have already been remarks from YouTube commenters lamenting just how similar all their songs sound.

Will grandson ultimately take off? Will their songs become the mainstays of several summer blockbuster movies? Only time will tell.

Based in: Toronto, Canada.
Sounds like: Purity Ring, The Glitch Mob.
Say what? grandson believes the world is in more need of ‘honest’ rock and roll than ever.

Over and out, Darren.
